Treherbert OAP Hall – Update – £1,690 awarded for “one final push for our lovely hall”

DECEMBER 10th 2024

We previously awarded a Vision Fund for the major renovation of this much loved community hall and when they approached us in last round of Micro Fund we were pleased to offer a final £1,690 for resin paths in their lovely community garden space.

With help from other funders like Lottery, Coalfields and the local authority and loads of support from Keep Wales Tidy they created a new garden and seating area. The resin paths mean now that seating areas are accessible and safe for all to use. We also funded some gardening equipment and a lovely neighbour volunteer will use these to maintain and care for the garden.

We called into their (hastily re-arranged) Christmas fete on Sunday and despite the terrible weather we saw the new paths which looked fantastic and was great to see the hall full to the brim and being supported by their members and community.

As soon as Spring comes we are sure people will be using and loving the new outdoor space as much as they do the hall.

  • The hall has been refurbished with significant funding and is used for bingo, meetings, private hire, knit and natter, Tai Chi, choir, parties and fetes and other activities. Tuesday and Thursday Slimming World have the hall. Knit and Natter is on a Monday afternoon. Tai Chi is Wednesday. There is a children’s choir on a Wednesday night and an adult choir on a Friday night.

The Fund was established by energy company Vattenfall to benefit the communities hosting the Pen y Cymoedd wind farm across the upper Neath, Afan, Rhondda and Cynon Valleys. It exists to support local people, groups and organisations to invest in themselves, their ideas and their communities.

The Community Fund has a substantial annual budget that is index-linked, meaning it increases in line with inflation. As an example, this equated to around £2.5 million in 2025. The Fund will continue to support communities until 2043, creating long-term opportunities for growth, resilience and positive change.

The Fund is managed by an independent, locally based not-for-profit Community Interest Company. It is overseen by a Board of Directors with strong local connections and delivered by a small but dedicated staff team with extensive community engagement experience. We are here to help ensure the Fund delivers on the vision and priorities of local communities.

Over the next 10 years, the Fund is focusing on investment in people, places and businesses — helping the Valleys to thrive, driving bold ideas, supporting transformation and creating lasting impact for current and future generations.
