Thriving Future for healthcare: £149,999 awarded to Tynewydd Pharmacy
OCTOBER 19th 2025
Tynewydd Pharmacy has been awarded £149,999 to transform its premises and expand access to vital healthcare services, helping to secure a thriving future for patients and the wider community.
The award is made up of a £6,500 grant and a repayable loan, reflecting our commitment to ensuring that the Fund can continue to support profit-making local businesses for years to come. This model allows enterprises to access the finance they need to grow, while repayments recycle back into the Fund—helping us build a thriving, resilient future for the wider community.
Tynewydd Pharmacy approached the Fund with an ambitious plan to:
- Expand Clinical Capacity and Patient Access – creating new consultation rooms, improving layout, and enhancing bilingual and disability access.
- Support Primary Care Resilience and Innovation – offering services such as UTI testing and clinical assessments to help reduce pressure on overstretched GP practices.
- Improve Health Equity – ensuring underserved communities, Welsh speakers, and patients with additional needs can access care locally.
- Invest in Workforce Development – providing space for staff training, student placements, and new local job opportunities.
- Drive Sustainability and Digital Transformation – future-proofing the pharmacy through green upgrades and space for automated dispensing technology.
With these changes, the pharmacy will not only improve access to NHS consultations and clinical services but also create a modern, inclusive healthcare hub for the Upper Rhondda.
Why we funded this project
There is a significant and growing need for improved access to primary care services in Treherbert and surrounding communities. Tynewydd Pharmacy is already playing a vital role in relieving pressure on local GP practices, but its current premises limit its ability to expand.
By supporting this development, we are investing in:
- More accessible, community-based healthcare services.
- Greater resilience for local primary care.
- Opportunities for workforce growth and innovation.
- A sustainable model of healthcare delivery in a high-need area.
This project aligns with our vision of a thriving, resilient fund area where local businesses are supported to innovate, grow, and deliver meaningful benefits to their communities.
Gareth Hughes, the Pharmacy Contractor at Tynewydd Pharmacy stated:
“Support from Pen y Cymoedd has been pivotal in turning our vision into reality. Their investment is enabling us to transform a small, outdated pharmacy into a modern, purpose-built healthcare hub at the heart of the community. With four new consultation rooms and a state-of-the-art dispensary, we are now equipped to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare to the local community and beyond for years to come.
Equally important is the model of reinvestment. By repaying the loan, we contribute to a cycle of growth through reinvestment by Pen Y Cymoedd that allows other local businesses to pursue their ambitions. This approach creates lasting impact and strengthens the fabric of our communities. We are deeply grateful for Pen y Cymoedd’s support and excited about the future it has helped us build”.

The Fund was established by energy company Vattenfall to benefit the communities hosting the Pen y Cymoedd wind farm across the upper Neath, Afan, Rhondda and Cynon Valleys. It exists to support local people, groups and organisations to invest in themselves, their ideas and their communities.
The Community Fund has a substantial annual budget that is index-linked, meaning it increases in line with inflation. As an example, this equated to around £2.5 million in 2025. The Fund will continue to support communities until 2043, creating long-term opportunities for growth, resilience and positive change.
The Fund is managed by an independent, locally based not-for-profit Community Interest Company. It is overseen by a Board of Directors with strong local connections and delivered by a small but dedicated staff team with extensive community engagement experience. We are here to help ensure the Fund delivers on the vision and priorities of local communities.
Over the next 10 years, the Fund is focusing on investment in people, places and businesses — helping the Valleys to thrive, driving bold ideas, supporting transformation and creating lasting impact for current and future generations.
