Glyncorrwg RFC: Strengthening a Community Hub
May 27th 2026
With support from a £6,444.30 Pen y Cymoedd Micro Fund award, Glyncorrwg RFC has transformed its clubhouse and outdoor space, helping the club strengthen its role as a vital community hub in the Upper Afan Valley.
Following the closure of the village’s only other social venue, the club has become an even more important space for local people, hosting rugby, football, darts, craft groups, community events and social activities.
Funding was used to modernise the club’s bar area with new seating and furniture, while the outdoor beer garden was redeveloped with new benches, landscaping and wildlife-friendly improvements. Nature boxes and green spaces were also created to encourage biodiversity.
The improvements have had a significant impact, creating a more welcoming environment for members, visitors and community groups. The upgraded outdoor area has been especially popular during good weather, helping the club host more outdoor events and increasing footfall and income.
The success of the project has also given the club confidence to continue planning further improvements, supporting its long-term sustainability as an important community facility for the Afan Valley.
The Fund was established by energy company Vattenfall to benefit the communities hosting the Pen y Cymoedd wind farm across the upper Neath, Afan, Rhondda and Cynon Valleys. It exists to support local people, groups and organisations to invest in themselves, their ideas and their communities.
The Community Fund has a substantial annual budget that is index-linked, meaning it increases in line with inflation. As an example, this equated to around £2.5 million in 2025. The Fund will continue to support communities until 2043, creating long-term opportunities for growth, resilience and positive change.
The Fund is managed by an independent, locally based not-for-profit Community Interest Company. It is overseen by a Board of Directors with strong local connections and delivered by a small but dedicated staff team with extensive community engagement experience. We are here to help ensure the Fund delivers on the vision and priorities of local communities.
Over the next 10 years, the Fund is focusing on investment in people, places and businesses — helping the Valleys to thrive, driving bold ideas, supporting transformation and creating lasting impact for current and future generations.
