CARRY ON TRIPS MICRO FUND GRANT – £1000

Cwmdare OAP Active Wales were awarded a Micro Fund grant of £1000 in September 2018. Based in Cwmdare, Cynon Valley with 106 members whose motto is “Retired from work and not from life” and running since 1941 with fortnightly meetings that include talks, bingo and sherry, they also have two annual events and two trips per year.
This is the largest OAP group we have received an application from with 106 members. Around 85 attend their fortnightly meeting at Cwmdare Hall but around 104 attend their trips including community members who are housebound usually. They are a very strong committed group who car share and collect people from home to attend meetings when they have limited mobility. They are working on building up a healthy reserve to lessen dependency on grants and members have worked very hard and contributed to this over last two years (manning events and raffles, producing goods for sale etc). The Committee wanted to thank the group by way of offering at least one free trip to all members.
They were given £1000 to cover a trip to Cardigan Bay.
“We had two buses and we went to Cardigan Bay, having lunch at the Cardigan Bay Hotel and then spent some time in the town. We all enjoyed the company of friends and people who do not normally leave Cwmdare without being in the company of others. Brent Thomas coaches were excellent, we had a fabulous day, mixing socially, staying active and building connections and friendships. We want to say a massive thank you to Pen y Cymoedd for a great day out for so many local residents.” – Mairwen Silvanus

How this project met the fund’s priorities:
Encourage participation in cultural activities / Communities that are healthier and more active / Support community spirit

The Fund was established by energy company Vattenfall to benefit the communities hosting the Pen y Cymoedd wind farm across the upper Neath, Afan, Rhondda and Cynon Valleys. It exists to support local people, groups and organisations to invest in themselves, their ideas and their communities.

The Community Fund has a substantial annual budget that is index-linked, meaning it increases in line with inflation. As an example, this equated to around £2.5 million in 2025. The Fund will continue to support communities until 2043, creating long-term opportunities for growth, resilience and positive change.

The Fund is managed by an independent, locally based not-for-profit Community Interest Company. It is overseen by a Board of Directors with strong local connections and delivered by a small but dedicated staff team with extensive community engagement experience. We are here to help ensure the Fund delivers on the vision and priorities of local communities.

Over the next 10 years, the Fund is focusing on investment in people, places and businesses — helping the Valleys to thrive, driving bold ideas, supporting transformation and creating lasting impact for current and future generations.
